Swap Rates explained

A swap (or overnight financing) is the cost or credit for holding a leveraged position past the daily rollover. It comes from the interest-rate differential of the two currencies, plus the provider’s markup.

Definition

The working meaning

If you are long the higher-yielding currency, you may receive a credit. If you are long the lower-yielding currency, you usually pay. Triple-swap Wednesday is a common convention to cover the weekend. Gold and oil financing uses a different book but the same idea: you are renting exposure.

Swaps are not the spread and not a commission. A position that is “flat” on the chart can still bleed if you hold it for weeks against the swap. Always read the provider’s contract specification; this page does not quote live swap tables.

Education first: know that time in a leveraged trade has a price even when the market does not move. Short-term trades around the calendar care less; swing trades care more.
